Hello! I’m Alyssa, a fourth-year English teacher in NYC. I primarily teach 11th and 12th grade, but have taught all grades from 9-12. Teaching was a career change for me. While going through my ‘quarter-life crisis,’ I decided to quit my cushy job in the entertainment industry and go back to school. There were two things I wanted to do when I initially started college: study journalism or become a teacher.
I went the journalism route first, so I figured it was finally time to become a teacher. I got my Master’s and completed student teaching during the COVID pandemic. My first year as a teacher was filled with tears. I cried and cried…and then I cried some more. While this has been my most challenging career, it has also been my most rewarding.
I created this blog as an outlet. My identity as a teacher is important to me, hence the blog title, ‘She Must Be a Teacher.’ However, this blog won’t be solely focused on teaching. Sure, I’ll share lesson plans, give tips on classroom management, and share my ups and downs as I begin my tenure year, but I’ll also be sharing my travels and life outside of teaching because I’m not just a teacher.
